Charitable Recycling - Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of toxins do cell phones contain?

Cell phones contain many toxic materials such as arsenic, mercury, lead, copper, zinc and brominated flame retardants which would be released into the air and groundwater supply if disposed of in landfills - creating threats to human and animal health as well as the environment.

What should I do to help?

Assist in safeguarding the environment and preventing this growing problem by donating your old and unused cell phones to Charitable Recycling. You will not only be keeping toxic materials out of the landfill, but assisting charities in achieving their fundraising goals.

How can my company or organization participate in Charitable Recycling?

How do charities benefit from Charitable Recycling?

A donation payment to charity is made for each and every cell phone collected for Charitable Recycling. Used cell phone collection enables charities to capitalize on the untapped disposal of all the old phones lying idle in homes and offices. Our plan is easy by design: You collect used cell phones and Charitable Recycling sends you a donation check to help exceed your fundraising goals.  Provided a minimum of 50 phones are sent to Charitable Recycling, your charity will receive a donation payment every 30 days.

Does Charitable Recycling pay for shipping?

Pickup and delivery is always FREE for 50+ cell phones. In addition, we provide - free of charge - cell phone return shipment boxes. Once your box is full, simply contact us to order a pre-paid, pre-addressed FedEx shipping label if you have 50+ phones to donate.

When does Charitable Recycling pay its member partners?

Phones received at Charitable Recycling by the 20th of the current month are credited for that month and the donation payment is processed by the 20th of the following month. Phones received after this date are credited for the next month. If less than 50 phones are sent in any given month, the donation payment is held until 50+ phones are accumulated.  Provided a minimum of 50 phones are sent to Charitable Recycling, your charity will receive a donation payment every 30 days.

Do I have to worry about being charged for the airtime if the phone(s) I donate get refurbished and reused?

No. When the phones are refurbished they are completely cleaned and reprogrammed. Please be reminded, however, to deactivate your wireless service before donating your phone(s).

How does the number of phones collected get tracked?

All cell phones are hand counted and tracked by donator by our Charitable Recycling receiving personnel. A completed Charitable Recycling Packing List must be included in every shipment sent to us - in order to ensure proper charity crediting. Charitable Recycling is not responsible for bulk shipments that do not include a completed packing list. Click here to download a packing list for your shipment.

Should I send the charger and other accessories for my phone?

It isn't necessary. You can send your cell phone and batteries (if available) and it will help raise funds for charity.

What types of phones does Charitable Recycling accept?

Charitable Recycling is the only program of its kind to accept any used cell phone - regardless of age or condition. This means the collected phones need not be in working order.

As an environmental company, our goal is to keep all used cell phones out of the local landfill. Therefore, Charitable Recycling places no restrictions, conditions or terms on the type of cell phones accepted. Even old "bag" phones are accepted at Charitable Recycling.  We do reserve the right to modify our cell phone acceptance policy should any entity attempt to violate the spirit of the program.

What happens to the phones that are donated to Charitable Recycling?

Many phones are donated to shelters for abused adults and children so they may have 911 (emergency only) communication. Charitable Recycling also provides cell phones to medical patients who are awaiting organ transplants. Also, some of the phones we receive are refurbished and redeployed in areas of the world where there are no land (wire) lines, or, where the cost of a new phone is prohibitive. Phones that cannot be refurbished or donated will be recycled and disposed of in an environmentally-responsible manner.
